Seeds. They seem like such a small thing when compared to the big, complex problems the world is facing—climate change, poverty, war, famine, peak oil and an exploding population. They’re so small, in fact, that most will fit easily under your thumb. But stop and think again. Without those tiny grains, what would be left on Earth?

Remember when you were a kid, and you’d get in trouble for not eating all of your dinner because your mom said there were starving children in Africa who would love to have that food? Well, all you moms out there can relax a little about uneaten leftovers — food scraps are getting new life as energy.

What do you get when you cross a grassroots movement with a food industry fearful of losing its influence? Bogus studies, campaigns of misinformation and opinion pieces filled with myth and vitriol.

I am intrigued with the creative way concrete jungle dwellers are finding ways to grow gardens whether it’s through yardsharing or fire escape farming, and now, Truck Farms. Film makers Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, the creative minds behind King Corn and The Greening of Southie are proving that you can garden anywhere with their mobile garden planted in the bed of their 1986 Dodge Ram pickup.

Well, someone has to do it. From the land down under comes the world’s hyper-miling champions (although they don’t like that term). John and Helen Taylor just broke their own record by averaging 67.9 miles per gallon in their 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI diesel. (Yes, Virginia, diesels can sometimes top hybrids in fuel economy).

Old-style 100-watt light bulbs will be banned in Europe’s shops next week in favor of new energy-saving models, but consumer groups on Wednesday gave the move a guarded welcome. From Sept. 1, 100-watt versions of the old incandescent bulbs will be banned from Europe’s shops and other bulbs with lower wattage will follow in the ensuing years, under a system agreed upon by European Union experts last December.
